Associate Vice Provost for Student Success
Overview: The University of Tennessee seeks an inspiring and collaborative leader to promote a culture of success for all our students. The Associate Vice Provost (AVP) provides vision and leadership through the creation and support of initiatives to promote and advocate for student success. The AVP supports the University's mission and strategic plan as an advocate for campus-wide efforts to retain and graduate diverse populations. In addition to having direct responsibility for campus units dedicated to student success, the AVP builds a strong support base by fostering partnerships with campus units and university administration as well as other organizations through grants and contracts. This position directs assessment efforts to tell the story of student success at the university by demonstrating the impact of student initiatives and communicating their connection to institutional values.
The Office of the Provost invites applications and nominations for the position. This is an exempt, 12 month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position that provides an exciting opportunity to be a part of UT's journey to join the ranks of the nation's Top 25 public research universities.
The Position: The AVP for Student Success will provide leadership for the Student Success unit, which combines the Student Success Center (SSC), the First-Year Studies (FYS) Department, the Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships (ONSF), and the Educational Advancement Program (TRIO). Specifically, the AVP will oversee efforts to review, assess, collaborate and implement programs that focus strategically on first generation, lower socio-economic, and other diverse student populations. In summary, the AVP will:
Provide leadership, training, direction and guidance for the unit
Support students as they transition throughout their academic careers
Develop and advocate for student success initiatives for all students
Foster and sustain campus partnerships in advancing student success
Educate others on issues impacting student achievement

Education: This position requires a masters' degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field.
Experience: The following experiences are required:
Eight or more years of full-time, progressive leadership experience in a college or university setting
Leadership of a unit or department, including staff supervision, fiscal management, and program implementation
Experience implementing programs and initiatives focused on student retention and success
Demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion
Evidence of successful collaboration with units across campus including student affairs, faculty, and institutional research to support student success
Experience working across the continuum of students' experiences such as underserved, underprepared, high-achieving, and non-traditional students
Demonstrated success in assessing programs and/or initiatives
Active involvement in national higher education associations related to student retention and/or student success
Desired
Experience:
Earned doctorate in higher education administration, student affairs, or related field
Work with a variety of student success programs such as: first year programs, supplemental instruction, academic coaching, academic advising, and other retention- and success-based initiatives
Experience advising students in transition (e.g. exploratory, internal and external transfer students)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of college student learning and development theory applied to practice
Knowledge of issues surrounding diversity and inclusion and ability to successfully address the needs presented by a diverse campus population
Knowledge of best practices in student success and vision for future challenges
Skill in leadership and team building working with faculty, staff, and students
Excellent oral communication and writing skills
Ability to determine data needs and to use data for decision-making and advocacy
Ability to teach and facilitate both classes and small group seminars
Ability to utilize technology such as student information and learning management systems
Ability to develop and implement a strategic plan
Salary: The annual salary is commensurate with experience and includes a standard university benefits package.
