Post Doctoral Research Associate, Synthetic Plant Biology

A postdoctoral position in synthetic biology is available starting immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Scott C. Lenaghan at the University of Tennessee. This position is currently funded, and will primarily focus on design and construction of synthetic organelles, development and testing of synthetic promoters, metabolic engineering in plants, and development of high-throughput tools for plant transformation, genome-editing and early-stage assessment. Applicants will focus on utilizing synthetic biology approaches to solve real-world challenges facing the energy, medical, agricultural, and biotechnology sectors. As the project is high-risk, high-reward, and focused on achieving aggressive milestones, applicants must be capable of thinking 'outside the box' and meeting designated deadlines. Applicants will be expected to interface with various industrial collaborators, providing reports, feedback, and leading discussions.
The Lenaghan Lab at UT provides outstanding research facilities and a highly stimulating interdisciplinary research environment including a large team of postdocs, technicians, and graduate and undergraduate students.
This position is available immediately for one-to-two years (depending on the immediate best-fit project), with a possibility of renewal for up to four years based on performance and continued funding. All employees are hired on a six-month probationary period, and postdocs are expected to generate at least one first-author paper per year from their UT work. Salary is based on experience and qualifications according to UT policy. In addition, UT provides an excellent fringe benefits package. Knoxville is located near the beautiful Smoky Mountains, has a low cost of living, and a moderate climate.
As this is a post-doctoral position, applicants must have demonstrated experience (publications) in molecular biology, cell biology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering or a related-field to be considered for this position. Preference will be given to applicants with strong publication records, considerable drive and motivation, and excellent problem-solving skills. Further, the position requires excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work in a highly interdisciplinary team-based environment. Applicants will be expected to help train graduate students in a variety of techniques, and to provide feedback on research methodologies.
