We're looking for a Medical Assistant to join our growing specialty practice to assist our histology department.
Prior work experience in a pathology laboratory, dermatology, customer service, scribing and medical office experience preferred.
High school diploma/GED required and Medical Assisting Certificate from an accredited school preferred.

Ability to communicate with physicians and advanced practitioners and external healthcare providers.
Knowledge of sterile technique and wound care.

Summary:
The lab assistant for pathology is responsible for performing laboratory support duties and general laboratory assistance.
They are also responsible for scribing patient pathology results and miscellaneous correspondence.
Processes incoming and outgoing specimens:
Retrieves specimens.
Verifies patient and specimen information to pathology requisition.
Checks paperwork to ensure it is complete and correct.
Prepares send out slides/blocks and related paperwork for outgoing consults and special stains as requested.
Ensures in/out logs are complete and accurate.
Maintains specimen filing system:
Prepares, prints, and applies slide labels.
Files blocks and slides.
Retains blocks and slides according to recommended retention schedule (10 years).
Maintains laboratory and patient records:
Ensures accurate data is entered into the computer system; cross-references patient/specimen/block/slide data.
Completes clerical tasks, including but not limited to:
logging patient information, faxing, completing requests, researching questions, etc.
Assists histology staff and pathologists as needed:
Follows laboratory protocols.
Coverslips histology slides, labels, and sorts cases to be delivered to the pathologist.
Organizes and delivers re-cut slides, special stains and immunohistochemical stains to the pathologist.
Performs patient biopsy and lab results calls.
Educates and counsels patients (in person or via telephone) regarding explaining treatment procedures, follow-up care and treatment, wound care, bandaging, dressing changes, use of medication, skin care and care of dermatologic conditions.
Processes pathology transcription:
Accurately transcribes pathology results and miscellaneous forms and documents.
Utilizes Modernizing Medicine (EMA), Microsoft Word and Allscripts programs as needed.
